BKW increases activities in Italy

27 July 2007 - Swiss utility BKW FMB Energy (BKW) has acquired a 40 per cent stake in STC S.p.A. of Forlì near Bologna, Italy - a leader in the construction of complementary industrial heat/electricity combination plants and biomass plants.

The long-term investment provides BKW with additional know-how in the construction of industrial cogeneration plants and biomass electricity generating plants. In addition, it gives BKW the opportunity to become directly involved in power plant projects and expand its industrial customer base. The parties have agreed not to disclose details of the purchase price.

For the past six years or so, BKW has been successfully represented in Italy through its sales company Electra Italia S.p.A.. In the spring of 2006 BKW also gained a foothold in the Italian energy production market with the purchase of eight hydroelectric plants and two gas fired power plant projects from Elettra Holding S.p.A.

By purchasing a stake in STC, BKW is expanding and strengthening its involvement in activities related to alternative production technologies.

BKW has energy sales of 18 TWh and a workforce of approximately 2000 employees in German and French-speaking Switzerland. I it is one of the major Swiss companies integrated in the European grid. The majority of its share capital of CHF 132m ($106m) is held by the Canton of Berne (52.91 per cent) and E.ON Energie AG (20 per cent).
