11 July 2006 - Washington Group International announced Monday that it has been selected to provide detailed engineering, procurement assistance and construction management services for installation of a flue gas desulphurization system, or scrubber, at Reliant Energy's Cheswick Power Plant, Springdale, Pa.
Flue gas desulphurization technology reduces sulphur dioxide emissions by converting the gas to a solid that can be removed before it exits the power plant stack.
"Reliant Energy is committed to caring for the environment and the communities where we live and work. Our decision to invest in this technology at our Cheswick plant is consistent with this commitment," said Dave Freysinger, senior vice president, Generation Operations, at Reliant Energy. "We are confident that Washington Group has the right knowledge and experience to assist us with this important environmental upgrade at Cheswick."
"Through our heritage companies, we have been supporting Reliant Energy since the 1920s, and we are particularly pleased our proven team was selected for this project," said Lou Pardi, president of Washington Group's Power Business Unit. "We welcome another opportunity to build on our long-term relationship as Reliant Energy upgrades the Cheswick plant."
Services will be managed from Washington Group's Princeton, N.J., office, where initial engineering for the project is under way. The system will be operational in fourth quarter of 2009.
