Siemens to build 800 MW CCGT for E.ON in Germany

7 July 2006 - Siemens Power Generation (PG) has signed a contract to build and maintain an 800 MW turnkey combined cycle power plant in Irsching, in Bavaria, Germany.

The order was placed by Gemeinschaftskraftwerk Irsching GmbH, a company jointly owned by power supply company E.ON Kraftwerke GmbH, Hanover, which holds a 60 per cent stake, and the two multi-utility companies N-ERGIE AG, Nuremberg and Mainova AG, Frankfurt, which have 25 per cent and 15 per cent holdings respectively. The order volume is approximately €450m ($574m).

Siemens PG is building the new natural gas-fired power plant on the site of an existing power plant in Irsching near Ingolstadt. The company is supplying the gas and steam turbines, the generators, the complete mechanical engineering with heat recovery steam generator and the electrical and control systems. The "Irsching 5" plant is scheduled to go into service at the end of 2008.

"This order underscores our cooperation as partners with E.ON," stated Klaus Voges, president of the Siemens Power Generation Group yesterday at the laying of the cornerstone for E.ON's new 800 MW combined cycle power plant that Siemens is constructing in the northern Italian town of Livorno-Ferraris between Turin and Milan. In Irsching, Siemens PG is currently building a prototype plant for the world's largest and most powerful gas turbine. After successful trial operation, it will be developed into a high-efficiency combined cycle power plant with a capacity of 530 MW and handed over to E.ON The company also is constructing the largest biomass-fired power plant in the United Kingdom for E.ON UK in Lockerbie, Scotland.

"Irsching 5 is already the fourth order for construction of a turnkey combined cycle power plant that we've booked in Germany since May 2005," said Voges. "This latest success emphasizes our leading position in the largest power plant market in Europe."
