6 July 2006 - The power generation plant of Qatar's Ras Laffan Project's first phase with a 680 MW production capacity has been completed, according to a statement issued earlier this week by owners Qatar Power Company (QPC).
The independent power and water project includes a water desalination unit with 68 million litres per day capacity, which is also part of the first phase. This is expected to be handed over by the contractors on August 10 this year.
"The power plant was handed over after completion on June 23 this year," QPC said. QPC, which has 100 per cent stake in the Ras Laffan Power and Water projects, is held 55 per cent by Qatar Electricity and Water Company, while 40 per cent ownership is with the UK's International Power and the remaining five per cent with Japan's Chubu Electric Power.
QPC has entered into a 25-year power and water purchase agreement with Kahramaa (Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation), which is involved in transmission and distribution of the utilities. At the expiry of the 25-year period, the plants will be transferred to Kahramaa.
