26 May 2006 - Alstom is to increase the capacity of a hydropower plant in Canada by 33 per cent after it was awarded a contract by Manitoba Hydro.

The scope of the project will mean that five of the Kelsey hydroelectric plant's seven generation units will be upgraded from 37.5 MVA to 50 MVA. New stator windings and new pole windings will also be supplied.

The first unit is scheduled for completion in April 2007. The plant currently has a generation capacity of 224 MW.

The Kelsey Hydroelectric Generating Station was built in the upper arm of the Nelson River in northern Manitoba between 1957 and 1961 to supply electricity to the International Nickel Company's and the city of Thompson.
