South Korea outlines $2bn for emissions technology R&D

24 May 2006 - South Korea has pledged to invest over $2bn over the next four years on researching and developing power generation technologies that will lower its carbon dioxide emissions.

As the world's ninth largest emitter of carbon dioxide, South Korea is preparing for 2013, when it will be subject to greater constraints under the Kyoto Protocol. The country is currently a signatory to the climate accord, but does not have to comply with the full rulings as it currently has 'developing country' status.

Almost half of the amount earmarked has been reserved for the development of alternatives to fossil fuel, while the rest will be split between developing technologies to aid energy efficiency and other emission reducing technologies.
