Momentum builds behind new nuclear capacity in US

19 May 2006 - The owner of the USA's largest nuclear plant is investigating the possibility of adding a further two reactors to the existing three reactor site.

Arizona Public Service Corp. expects that electricity demand from its customers will grow by around 3000 MW over the next decade. To help meet this the company is exploring the possibility of expanding the Palo Verde plant to that of its original five unit design.

The three-reactor Palo Verde nuclear plant, west of Phoenix, currently has an installed capacity of 3800 MW.

The news came as President Bush told nuclear industry leaders that the country must start building new nuclear capacity soon.

"There is a growing consensus that nuclear power is a key part of a clean, secure energy future," Bush told industry executives at the Nuclear Energy Institute's annual conference. "To maintain our economic leadership and strengthen our energy security, America must start building nuclear power plants."
