5 May 2006 -- Residents of Bristol, Rhode Island, US, began giving their opinions yesterday on proposed projects for wind energy, reported East Bay Newspapers.
The survey will help to identify potential sites for wind turbines in Bristol. The wind projects will be based off of those recently completed at the Portsmouth Abbey School. Some environmental groups have gone to Portsmouth Abbey location to tour the facility.
"It was extremely impressive," said Save Bristol Harbor President Stephan Brigidi to the news organization. "It's a beautiful sculpture in itself; aesthetically, it's fascinating. And it produces a lot of electricity. I think it's a win, win, win all the way around."
Rhode Island is trying to attract industry investment in the state for wind power. If mills are built, 15 percent or more of the town's energy needs could be supplied by a renewable source.
"The way to [construct the mills] economically is to do many of them at a time. If the survey shows that people welcome it, then developers will be willing to come. Otherwise, they may not; developers may not want to come here because there is plenty of demand [for windmills] elsewhere," said RWU professor Lefteris Pavlides to East Bay Newspapers. Pavlides has been studying the prospect of wind energy in Bristol since last year.
