5 May 2006 - Ten million rural residents in China will have their electricity supplies boosted after plans were announced to increase the country's installed rural hydropower capacity by 15 000 MW by 2010.
The plans unveiled by China's Ministry of Water Resources will see a shift away from the use of traditional wood fuels that are currently used for localized energy production.
It is estimated that 2.3 million hectares of forest will be protected as a result of the new hydropower projects.
According to the Ministry, China increased its rural hydropower installed capacity by 10 650 MW from 2001 to 2004. At the end of 2004, the country's rural areas had an installed hydropower capacity of 38 650 MW.
