3 May 2006 - Four Chinese companies have beaten off competition from American, German and Japanese firms to supply Indonesia's state owned electricity company with 10 000 MW of coal fired power generation equipment.
The $7bn deal was agreed between the state owned Perusahaan Listrik Negara and the Chinese equipment manufacturers Harbin Power, Shanghai Electricity Corporation, Dongfang Electricity Corporation and China National Technology Import Export Corporation.
It is the Indonesian government's intention to build eleven 300 MW power plants over the next 30 months and six 600 MW plants over the next three years.
According to reports the Chinese companies were selected as they were competitively priced and best placed to meet the tight delivery schedules.
The four companies offered Indonesia's government a construction cost of between $800 and $850 per kW compared to the others involved in the bidding contest, which offered between $1000 and $1700 per kW.
After reaching the agreement, the contract will be formally signed in August this year. China's Exim Bank and the Bank of China are both to provide funding for the projects through export credits.
