27 April 2006 - VA Tech Hydro has signed a contract with Natsionalna Elektricheska Kompania EAD (NEK) for the refurbishment of the Dolna Arda hydropower plant cascade in Bulgaria.
The project involves the refurbishment of the three power plants in the ´Dolna Arda´ hydro power cascade consisting of the hydro power plant ´Kardjali´ (four machine sets with a total output of 106 MW), the hydro power plant ´Studen Kladenez´ (four machine sets with a total output of 60 MW) and the hydro power plant ´Ivailovgrad´ (three machine sets with a total output of 103.5 MW.
In addition, ´Studen Kladenez´ will be enlarged with an additional 16 MW machine. The order value of VA Tech Hydro amounts to approximately €50m ($62.3m).
VA Tech Hydro has worked on numerous projects already realized in Bulgaria, including the ´Tsankov Kamak´ hydropower plant project currently under completion.
The construction work required for the enlargement of the ´Studen Kladenez´ hydropower plant will be carried out by PORR Technobau und Umwelt AG as an additional contract worth around €16m.
After the hydropower plant ´Tsankov Kamak´, ´Dolna Arda´ is the second project to be realized between Bulgaria and Austria under the flexible instruments of the Kyoto Protocol. The emission certificates thus generated will be allotted to Austria's Kyoto targets.
