Mitsubishi electric enters European photovoltaic inverter market

21 April 2006 - The president of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation Setsuhiro Shimomura said today that his firm would introduce two new independently developed and manufactured photovoltaic inverters to the European market in September.

Europe is the largest market in the world for photovoltaic power generation systems and Mitsubishi Electric will be the first Japanese manufacturer to enter the market. Growth in Europe is around 50 per cent annually driven largely by new Feed-in Tariff subsidies systems in Germany and other similar systems established in Spain and Italy.

Photovoltaic inverters are necessary to convert DC current produced by PV modules into home and grid useable AC current. Mitsubishi Electric has been developing inverters since 1991 in collaboration with NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) and has been supplying the Japanese market with models with 95 5 per cent efficiency since the beginning of the year.

In overseas markets Mitsubishi has been limited to supplying only the modules due to differences in power grids, installation conditions and safety certifications.
