Delayed West Java plant revived

21 April 2006 - The Indonesian diversified industrial trading group PT Bakrie & Brothers revealed yesterday that is finalizing a feasibility study on a steam powered electricity generating project with a capacity of 1320 MW in Cirebon, West Java.

The project was first planned in the mid 1990's but was shelved along with a number of large construction projects due to government financial constraints.

The plant is expected to cost in the region of $1.4bn and construction should start next year, according to Bakrie President Bobby Ghafur Umar. He said that the project will be built in cooperation with International Power Ltd from Britain and Toyota Toshu Co. from Japan.

Bakrie is also in a consortium with Babcock to take part in a tender to build another power plant in the same city with a capacity 600 MW.
