21 April 2006 - The Japan Bank for International Cooperation has signed a loan agreement totalling up to $1bn in project financing for the Al Hidd Independent Water and Power Project.
The project is the first IWPP project that Japanese companies have undertaken in Bahrain and the first loan that JBIC has extended in project financing for a project in Bahrain. It will allow the developers to fulfil its agreement of acquiring the existing Al Hidd power and water plant and extending its capacity.
Having formed a consortium, International Power, Suez Energy International and Sumitomo Corporation announced they had purchased the Al Hidd independent power and water project, and signed a 20 year Power and Water Purchase Agreement (PWPA) with the Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) for its output, in January this year.
The five-year old combined cycle gas power plant and a water desalination plant that has an output of 1000 MW and 113.6 million litres/day.
When the extension is complete the project is expected to meet 20 per cent of Bahrain's total power needs and 65 per cent of its urban water demand.
