AE&E to build waste to energy plant in Belgium

19 April 2006 - A subsidiary of Austrian Energy & Environment is to build a new waste treatment plant in Belgium that will use household and commercial waste to generate 200 000 MWh of electricity per year.

Swiss Von Roll Inova was awarded the €140m ($173m) contract by the Belgian waste disposal association Intradel after it was decided that the existing facility was no longer able to meet the region's growing demands.

The thermal waste treatment plant will be built in Lüttich and will handle all waste from private households and commercial businesses in the region.

Jürgen Wild, CEO of Austrian Energy & Environment said: "The construction of this new plant will guarantee sufficient capacity for the efficient thermal treatment of 320 000 tonnes of waste per year. It will also generate roughly 200 000 MWh of electricity each year, which will be fed into the local network."

The start of construction is planned for August 2007, and test operations are scheduled for the end of 2008.
