Construction starts of Yellow River hydro plant

19 April 2006 - Construction of the Laxiwa Hydroelectric Power Station, the largest of its kind in China's Yellow River valley, has begun.

The power station will have a total installed capacity of 4200 MW made up of six 700 MW units.

Located in Guide County, northwestern Qinghai Province, the station will be the second tiered hydropower plant between Longyang Gorge and Qingtong Gorge on the river's upper reaches. Its 250m - high dam will be the highest on the river.

The Laxiwa Hydraulic Power Station is one of the state's key projects in the 11th Five-Year Plan period (2006-2010), and has an estimated cost of 14.5bn ($1.8bn). Its first generating unit is scheduled for operation in 2008 and the whole project for completion in 2010.
