RWE to build 2000 MW co-fired power plant in the Netherlands

18 April 2006 - RWE is to build a new state of the art combined power plant in the Netherlands that will co-fire hard coal with biomass.

RWE's CEO Harry Roels made the announcement last Thursday at the company's Annual General Meeting in Essen, Germany.

The plant will have an installed capacity of approximately 2000 MW and will have a net efficiency rate of 46 per cent. The company is currently examining two possible seaside locations for the €1.5bn ($1.8bn) plant at Rotterdam Maasvlakte and Eemshaven.

Once the final site is chosen following further feasibility studies, construction of the plant is expected to begin at one of the sites in 2008 with the intention for it to enter commercial operation in 2012 or 2013.
