13 April 2006 - TXU Wholesale, a subsidiary of TXU Corp., announced it has increased its portfolio of wind power contracts with a 125 MW agreement with Airtricity, a renewable energy company based in Dublin, Ireland.
Mike McCall, chairman and CEO of TXU Wholesale commented that there is a growing market in Texas for renewable energy and that "fuel diversity is the key to price stability and dependability."
TXU Wholesale and its affiliates currently have contracts for 580 MW of renewable energy from 702 wind turbines. The Airtricity contract will increase those numbers to 705 MW and 756 turbines, respectively, when it goes into effect January 1, 2007. Airtricity will provide the wind power from its Forest Creek Wind Farm, currently under construction about 25 miles southeast of Big Spring, Texas. The 15-year contract will provide enough power for more than 24 000 homes and meet the annual energy needs of about 56 000 Texans.
The wind farm is Airtricity's first in the state of Texas. It will generate electricity from 54 2.3-MW Siemens wind turbines, the largest turbines to date built in the state. Airtricity will own and operate the facility following its construction.
