13 April 2006 - The first turbine and generator set at the 520 MW Omkareshwar hydroelectric power plant in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh has been inaugurated at a ceremony held by Voith Siemens Hydro and the project's owner.
The project on the Narmada River was developed by Narmada Hydroelectric Development Corporation, which awarded the contract for its construction to a consortium including Voith Siemens Hydro in July 2003.
It is estimated that India currently uses less than 25 per cent of its overall hydropower potential of 150 000 MW. The country's use of hydro generation has declined over the past 25 years and according to Voith Siemens, hydro's current share of the energy mix is 25 per cent, against a government target of 40 per cent.
After ongoing talks with the Indian government, the Asian Development Bank recently agreed to provide $300m to help develop hydropower projects in the state of Uttaranchal.
