13 April 2006 - Turkey is to build its first nuclear power plant on the coast of the Black Sea after the government announced its selection ahead of eight other contenders.
According to Turkey's atomic energy institute, the site at Sinop was chosen due to the high availability of cooling water and its secure location with regard to the country's geological fault lines.
A government report has outlined plans to build an initial nuclear capacity of 5000 MW, with the first nuclear power plant scheduled to enter commercial operation in 2012.
It is understood that discussions are underway between the government and nuclear technology companies from the US, the UK, China and Japan.
Turkey has long maintained its desire to develop nuclear power, but proposed projects have been postponed due to financial difficulties. However, in view of the recent high oil prices and the country's recently interrupted natural gas supplies from Russia and Iran, it is believed that the government is determined to see its plans brought to fruition this time around.
