12 April 2006 -- In the face of rising energy prices, PSE&G is alerting energy consumers that there is still time to apply for help paying their winter heating bills. The application deadline for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), has been extended through May 31st. This program helps eligible residents offset the cost of their winter gas bills.
While there's tremendous need, only a small portion of those eligible for energy assistance actually apply.
"Enrolling in LIHEAP can make a real difference for families struggling to make ends meet," said Eileen Leahey, PSE&G's manager of payment assistance outreach. "We are working with the Board and hundreds of social service agencies and community leaders across the state to build awareness about available assistance and increase program participation."
Completed applications may also qualify and automatically enroll residents in NJ's Universal Service Fund (USF), a year-long state-administered payment assistance program that considers both income and energy consumption in determining eligibility.
