Germany to build its first offshore wind farm in Baltic Sea

12 April 2006 - Germany's Ministry for the Environment has granted initial planning permission for what will be the country's first offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea.

The Ministry's department responsible for the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region gave permission for the construction of a 21-turbine wind farm at a distance of 15 to 16 km off the Darb coast and in water depths of 16 to 19 metres.

"The permission of Baltic I in line with the Federal Emission Protection Law is an important milestone for the development of the offshore market in Germany, which is crucial for competitiveness," said Prof. Dr. Fritz Vahrenholt, CEO of REpower Systems.

It is understood that REpower Systems has the option of erecting two of its 5 MW turbines for the so-called Baltic I project.

Vahrenholt said: "The possibility of participating in Baltic I with two 5M, would give REpower the pole position among the first German offshore projects.

REpower has been operating the prototype 5M in Brunsbuttel in Schleswig-Holstein since February 2005. In 2006, the company plans to erect another four of the turbines in onshore and offshore demonstration projects.
