PennWell acquires sustainable Energy and technology magazines

10 April 2006 - Media and information group PennWell Corporation has acquired the sustainable energy and technology magazine group consisting of Renewable Energy World, Cogeneration and On-Site Power Production and Waste Management World from James & James (Science Publishers) Ltd. based in London.

Renewable Energy World is the leading international magazine for the renewable energy industry. Its subscribers include business professionals, engineers and policy makers around the world who are involved in power generating utilities, government, manufacturing of renewable energy systems, and management of renewable energy sites.

"Renewable Energy World will provide a powerful combination with PennWell's POWER-GEN Renewable Energy & Fuels Conference & Exhibition, our annual trade show for the rapidly-growing renewable energy industry," said PennWell President and Chief Executive Officer Robert F. Biolchini. "We view Renewable Energy World and the other two magazines as a strong fit with our portfolio of publications, events and information products for the global energy industry."

Cogeneration and On-Site Power Production focuses on the clean and highly-efficient generation of power through decentralized generation and combined heat and power for an industrial, utility and governmental readership. The magazine is published in association with the World Alliance for Decentralized Energy (WADE).

Waste Management World subscribers are involved in the waste management industry, including equipment suppliers, manufacturers, contractors, health authorities and government. It is also the official magazine of the International Solid Waste Association.

The magazines, which are published bi-monthly, and their related annual business guides will remain in London under the management of David McConnell, Publishing Director, who joins PennWell as Group Publisher of the three titles. The magazines' Editorial Director Jackie Jones will also join PennWell. Edward Milford, founder of the magazines and James & James Managing Director, noted his confidence in PennWell as the best home for the future growth of the magazines. "PennWell's combination of industry expertise and worldwide reach in multiple energy markets, together with their reputation for editorial integrity and quality products and events makes them ideally placed to continue the development of these titles," Milford said.

Biolchini also stated, "PennWell is pleased that Edward Milford has agreed to remain as Publisher Emeritus of the magazines since his dedication to high quality editorial coverage and ethical reporting conforms to PennWell's strict standards." Biolchini further added, "We are committed to all facets of energy, to include power and oil and gas, the world's most critical industries and view these three unique magazines as the foundation for building PennWell's international sustainable energy and technology presence in areas of increasing importance to our customers and energy producers around the globe."

In addition to POWER-GEN Renewable Energy & Fuels, a growing event which will be held April 10-12, 2006 in Las Vegas, PennWell owns 13 magazines and 26 events for the oil and gas, electric power, water and related energy markets, including Oil & Gas Journal, Offshore, Oil & Gas Financial Journal, Power Engineering and Power Engineering International magazines, and leading events such as Deep Offshore Technology and POWER-GEN, held annually in North America, Europe, Asia, Russia, India, China and the Middle East.

Financial terms of the sale were not disclosed.
