Alstom to modernize Scandinavian hydro plants

10 April 2006 - Alstom has been awarded three contracts from utilities in Sweden and Norway to modernize hydro power plant equipment.

In Sweden, Alstom, in consortium with Waplans, has been contracted by the Swedish State Electricity Board (Vattenfall) to refurbish the Gejman hydro power plant, located on a tributary of the Ume River.

The scope of work includes replacement of the existing 37-year-old equipment with a complete new generating unit (63 MVA) and its auxiliary systems, which will secure the operation of the station for another 40 years.

Alstom will carry out the installation of the new generator, new turbine runner and distributed control equipment for ancillary systems. Waplans is responsible for all other turbine parts and their installation. Commissioning of the new unit is scheduled for the end of 2007.

In Norway, Alstom will supply two 18.5 MVA generators to replace the existing ones at the Gronvollfoss station, owned by the utility Skagerak Kraft AS. The station was built in 1933 and is located on the Tinna River in Notodden.

The company will also provide a 21 MW turbine/generator unit for the Funna power station, due to be operational by the third quarter of 2007. Funna, located in Meraker, Norway, is owned by the utility Nord-Trondelag Elektrisitetsverk.
