Foster Wheeler returns to clean coal

5 April 2006 - Spanish company Hidroelectrica del Cantabrico (HC) has awarded Foster Wheeler a $6.6m contract to conduct a second environmental retrofit at its Abono coal fired power plant.

The project will see Foster Wheeler install new low-NOx burners and upgrade the mill classifiers on Unit 1. The company was awarded the contract to upgrade the burners of Unit 2 last year.

The two boilers at the Abono plant are rated at 360 MW and 540 MW respectively and were originally commissioned by Foster Wheeler in 1973 and 1985. They were designed to fire local bituminous coal and blast furnace gas.

HC is taking action to modify its plant to meet European Union emission regulations.
