30 March 2006 - A GE Energy Frame 9E gas turbine is currently being installed at the Los Vientos power plant in the northwestern section of Santiago, Chile. The new plant is owned by AES Gener, an electricity generation group based in Santiago.
The gas turbine was manufactured at GE's facilities in Greenville, South Carolina and shipped to the project site in December 2005, with commercial operation scheduled to start in June 2006.
When operating on natural gas, the gas turbine is rated to produce more than 126 MW of power in simple-cycle, base load service. Running on distillate fuel, the turbine is rated to generate more than 123 MW.
Along with the gas turbine, GE has provided a generator, a Mark V Speedtronic turbine control system, additional power island equipment and technical assistance.
The Los Vientos power plant is the fourth project in Chile over the past seven years to utilize GE's Frame 9E gas turbine technology. Previously, GE provided four of these machines for the Atacama project, and two apiece for the Taltal and Candelaria projects.
Project management and technical support are being coordinated from GE's facilities in Belfort, France.
AES Gener is part of the Arlington, Virginia-based AES Corporation, one of the world's leading power companies with businesses in 26 countries.
