29 March 2006 - Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) announced yesterday that it had completed the second phase of a $65m project to retrofit its Power Station 3 and make it more environment-friendly.
The project, which involves retrofitting all six gas turbines in Alba's Power station 3 with low Nitrogen Oxide (Nox) burners and replacing existing control systems, has taken a major step forward towards making it the most environment-friendly power plant of its kind in Bahrain when Alba successfully retrofitted its second unit earlier this year.
The announcement was made by the Alba Power General Manager, Mohammed Awadh who said the project was part of Alba's long standing commitment to protecting the environment. "In 2003, the Alba Board of directors approved plans to spend $ 65m to retrofit all six gas turbines in Alba's Power station 3 with low Nitrogen Oxide (Nox) burners and replace existing control systems to reduce waste emissions and help control environmental pollution," said Awadh. "The project has no commercial value and offers no financial return on investment - but was approved because it marks an important environmental investment that will help control pollution and provide a cleaner, safer environment for the people of Bahrain," he said.
"Work began on the project immediately after the Boards instructions and, within the year, the first gas turbine was retrofitted and commissioned successfully. This had reduced NOx emissions to a full 20 per cent below the regulatory standard," said Awadh.
