6 March 2006 - Metso Automation has been awarded the contract to deliver an automation system to the new 460 MWe PKE S.A Lagisza power plant in southern Poland. Poludniowy Koncern Energetyczny SA's (PKE) plant will be hard coal fired being also able to utilize biofuel up to 10 per cent of the fuel load.
Foster Wheeler will supply a circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) boiler island, which will be the world's largest CFB boiler and the world's first supercritical CFB unit. The double world-first boiler island makes also the automation system delivery demanding and unique.
Metso Automation will provide the new plant with a complete DCS system based on metsoDNA technology. In addition to automation system, the delivery includes a performance monitoring application, a burner management system as well as power unit safety and interlocking systems.
Scheduled for a start-up at the beginning of 2009, the new PKE S.A Lagisza unit will be set alongside PKE's existing 720 MWe power station. The project is a part of an on-going program by PKE to replace outdated capacity with modern, high-efficiency and pro-environmental technologies.
PKE consists of six power plants and two CHP plants. With a total power generation capacity of 4953 MWe, PKE has about 15 per cent of market share in Poland's electricity production and it is the second largest electricity generator in Poland. With a heat capacity of 2400 MWt, PKE has a 16 per cent share in local heat market.
