23 February 2006 - The Indonesian government and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) are today holding a joint seminar that will explore the possibility of building the country's first nuclear power plant in Jakarta.
The seminar will see officials from the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources exchange information and opinions about a possible nuclear power plant project.
A recent study carried out by the government has recommended that the country should have a nuclear power plant in operation by 2017. However, this date is subject to many factors including financial viability, available technology and public acceptance.
Mitsubishi said that around 150 government officials were slated to attend the seminar, including representatives from both BATAN and Badan Pengawas Tenaga Nuklir, the nuclear regulatory agency.
