23 January 2006 - The world's first 800 kV direct current power transmission line is to be constructed in China to send electricity from the southwest Yunnan Province to the booming Guangdong.
The country's second largest electricity distributor, China Southern Power Grid Corporation, will construct the line. Around 60 per cent of the equipment for the project will be made in China.
The 800 kV project will be completed by 2010. It is one of four projects outlined by the company to improve the electricity supply from the resource-rich west to the power hungry east. The $29bn transmission programme is scheduled to be completed within five years.
