13 February 2005 - Burns & McDonnell has been retained by The Erora Group to provide consulting engineering services for a state-of-the-art Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power generation facility located in Southern Illinois.
Burns & McDonnell is providing overall project management as well as a portion of the Front End Engineering Design services for the project, including the power block and balance of plant equipment and systems. The engineering design work will lead up to an expected construction start date in 2007.
The Taylorville Energy Center, an approximately 770 MW IGCC plant fueled by Illinois basin coal, will utilize coal gasification technology to produce both electric energy and a commercial chemical feedstock.
"IGCC technology has promise for being the future of clean coal power generation in the U.S., and we're committed to furthering the commercialization of this technology," said Ray Kowalik, Vice President, Burns & McDonnell Energy Group. "Gasification will be a key technology for the US to capitalize on our large coal reserves and displace our dependence on natural gas, which is both high priced and has high price volatility. Gasification will play a prominent role in both the power generation industry and other industries that rely on natural gas."
