Jordanian company to build power plant in Kurdish region of Iraq

4 January 2006 - A Jordanian company has secured a $250m contract with the Iraqi government to build and operate a 500 MW power plant in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, according to a report in the London-based al Hayat daily.

Jordan-based Mass Jordan Trading Company will build the plant in a town called Bir Daoud, 25 km south of Arbil, the seat of the Kurdistan Regional Government.

Ahmed Ismail Saleh, chairman of Mass Jordan, said that the contract is for 15 years and the company will be responsible for operating and maintaining the plant.

The plant will be operated using liquefied natural gas taken from the Khurmala Field which is only 10 km away. It will include four stations with nominal power generation capacity of 125 megawatts each. Initial plant production will not exceed 450 MW. This would meet demand for electricity in Arbil and neighbouring regions, which stands between 380 and 400 MW.

Construction works on the plant will be completed in 18 months.
