6 December 2005 - A Brazilian construction company has been awarded a $450m contract to create a hydroelectric power plant in Colombia.
The contract represents the largest deal Brazil's Construcoes e Comercio Camargo Correa has won in a foreign country since it embarked on a programme of internationalization.
Work to construct the Porce III Hydroelectric plant will begin this month and will be completed in five years. The Brazilian company will lead a consortium that includes the Colombian firms Conconcreto and Coninsa.
The plant will be of interest to observers due to the distance between the dam and the underground power station meaning that construction of a 12 km delivery tunnel will be necessary.
When it enters commercial operation in the second half of 2010, the 660 MW plant will play a fundamental role in Colombia's generation mix. The total cost of the project is estimated at $900m.
