6 December 2005 - US power company CMS Energy plans to sell its only nuclear power plant by 2007 in the belief that single nuclear plant ownership is now to costly.
David Joos, CMS Energy's president and chief executive officer, said the decision to sell the Palisades plant reflects the current realities in the nuclear power marketplace: "Ownership of nuclear power plants in consolidating as companies with multiple nuclear units are able to share operating practices, experiences and economies of scale."
Joos emphasised that the plant would only be sold if a satisfactory bid was made and added: "We expect a high level of interest in Palisades and we're optimistic that we'll see some attractive bids."
The Palisades plant, located near South Haven, Michigan, US, produces up to 798 MW. It is currently licensed to operate until 2011 and CMS has applied to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to renew the licence for an additional 20 years. The plant will also be sold with a long-term power purchase agreement.
