All renewable community project could fail, warns Greenpeace

21 November 2005 - The Philippine province of Negros will fail in its ambition to become Southeast Asia's first ever community to be fully powered by renewable energy unless steps are taken to galvanize the campaign.

In 2002, Negros became the first ever community in the Philippines and Asia to reject a coal power plant installation. The province has since committed to becoming the first area in Southeast Asia to be powered 100 per cent by renewable energy such as wind, solar, geothermal and modern biomass.

Although the plan was implemented with great force at the beginning, Greenpeace has said immediate steps must be taken to halt a recent lagging.

Greenpeace International's Athena Ballesteros called on the government and financial institutions to show the will needed to ensure the aim is met.

Ballesteros said: "Negros is one of the few provinces in the Philippines with a renewable energy policy. But they need the financial backing to complete the phasing in of renewable energy, without which the policy would fail."
