18 November 2005 - Serbia is planning to begin the liberalization of its electricity market within the next three months, Alain Deriaz of Balkan Energy Solutions told a Rome conference Wednesday.
The move comes in the wake of the establishment of an Energy Community for Southeast Europe which will encourage development of the sector and bring standards more into line with EU requirements.
Serbia's plan is to liberalize the markets for both production and transmission, which are currently under monopoly control, Deriaz said at the Greenpower Mediterranean Conference. He said Serbia is strongly encouraging foreign investments in its energy infrastructure, including small hydro power.
The Serbian government is preparing further legislation to promote hydro power production and plans to introduce incentives for small renewable energy producers, including creating a green certificates system, Deriaz said.
