4 November 2005 - Iraqi Electricity Minister Mohsen Shlash said this week that his country was holding intensive talks with Kuwait and other neighboring countries to add to power imports into Iraq.
Addressing a news conference following a meeting with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, Shlash said Iraq that Kuwaiti and Iraqi officials were involved in talks on the possibility of Kuwait exporting electricity to Iraq. Improving relations between the two countries sine the fall of Saddam have made this a possibility.
He also said his country was holding similar talks with Turkish companies raising the prospect of a power grid linking the two countries. He added cooperation with Iran on the same area was in progress as well.
Shlash, who recently survived an assassination attempt in which two of his bodyguards were killed, said that Iraq's power generation in July has reached 5370 MW, which is equal to the country's electricity output ahead of the 2003 war. He blamed militant attacks on power plants for the power failures seen in different areas of Iraq periodically, and hoped the Iraqi security forces would provide protection for such plants.
