EU to press Chinese on renewable energy

4 November 20005 - At an international conference on renewable energy in Beijing on 7-8 November 2005, European Union (EU) Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas will meet high level officials from the Chinese government to discuss the co-operation between the EU and China on energy and climate change issues.

The EU's message during these talks, which will take place in preparation for the UN Climate Change Convention Conference (COP11) at the end of the month in Montreal, will be that efforts by the Chinese government to promote the development of renewable energy are essential for the global fight against climate change.

The conference in Beijing, which is organized by the Chinese and supported by the German government, will serve as a forum for representatives of 80 countries and the EU, including numerous ministers. It is a follow-up event to the World Sustainable Development Summit in Johannesburg in 2002 and the International Conference on Renewable Energy in June 2004

Participants will also discuss ways in which international co-operation on renewables and technology transfer to developing countries can be strengthened.

The renewables industry welcomes this approach. "We can point in the right direction, but it is down to decision-makers to commit to concrete targets and create a favourable policy framework for renewables. This is especially true in the developing world and in China, where energy demand is rising rapidly," said Arthouros Zervos, President of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).
