21 September 2005 - China will be the driving force behind the renaissance of nuclear energy, according to estimates from the International Energy Agency.
Currently experiencing mass growth, the Asian country is predicted to build 31 more nuclear power plants before 2020, increasing its total nuclear capacity to 40 000 MW.
It is expected that the country will have to seek international co-operation, as it is currently capable of producing nuclear power stations with a capacity up to 600 MW, someway short of the 1000 MW stations it is seeking to build.
Some international companies have estimated that a 31-plant nuclear build programme would cost around $65bn.
