Mitsubishi explains nuclear plant data leak

31 August 2005 - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries have admitted that a leak of internal information relating to Japanese nuclear power plant inspections occurred through an employee of a sub-contractor.

The information that was sent out through the internet was for inspection information for power plants nationwide and included information on three nuclear power plants of Hokkaido Electric Power, Kansai Electric Power and Kyushu Electric Power.

The information included inspection results of turbines and other equipment used in the plants as well as pictures and diagrams of parts.

Mitsubishi Heavy says there was no information related to the protection and security of nuclear reactors and nuclear materials. It said that the information was leaked from the computer of an employee of an Osaka subcontracting firm that
handled the inspections. The computer was infected with a virus and the information was sent via the file-sharing programme Winny. The information was leaked this year from the end of April through the early part of May.
