26 August 2005 - The crucial Pacific Intertie transmission line that connects the Pacific Northwest with Southern California has been reconnected after it tripped off line forcing a series of rolling blackouts in the region.
Operators of the Intertie, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, instructed the California Independent System Operator (Cal-ISO) of the outage at around 3:30pm yesterday. Cal-ISO then instructed the utility Southern California Edison (SCE) to reduce electrical load by 800 MW to prevent further disruption to the rest of the Californian grid.
SCE took groups of circuits out of service on rotation, affecting customers in several cities including: Long Beach, Santa Barbara, Irvine, Chino Hills, Palm Desert, Torrance and San Bernardino. The outages affected approximately 309 000 customers. Power was restored shortly after 5pm.
Investigations are being carried out on the Intertie to discover what caused the break in transmission.
