18 August 2005 - Coal will remain the basis of China's long-term energy generation plans, according to Zhang Guobao, vice minister of the country's State Development and Reform Commission.
Zhang said further details of the long and medium term energy plans would be released after they had been adjusted to match the country's economic development plan for the next five years.
While coal will keep its position as the leading fuel for energy production, the country will focus on increasing energy efficiency and promoting energy conservation. Priority will also be given to increasing domestic electrification.
