16 June 2005 - The French Minister for Ecology and Sustainable Development, Madame Mrs. Nelly Olin, has announced that the French government has joined the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP), a coalition of governments, NGOs and businesses dedicated to accelerating the market development of clean energy.
Madame Olin said: "France is enthusiastic to participate in the REEEP initiative. Climate change and global warming make it indeed necessary to enhance public and private efforts supporting renewables, especially in the developing world. We have already started to cooperate in the field."
France joins its fellow G8 members - the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada - as a REEEP member. It is the 27th government to join REEEP since it was launched by the British Prime Minister Tony Blair at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002.
REEEP's International Director, Marianne Osterkorn, welcomed France to REEEP. "France has much to offer the partnership. In addition to its knowledge of global energy markets, it has played a leading role in the development of renewable and energy efficient technologies. Such expertise will undoubtedly help REEEP achieve its goals of reducing climate change and providing power to the world's poor through clean energy development," she said.
Mrs. Margaret Beckett, UK Secretary of State for the Environment, echoed her comments. "Having France in REEEP will help deliver the action on climate change that we all demand and which will be at the top of the G8 agenda next month," she said.
REEEP helps establish investment climates to encourage the development and use of clean energy and assists with creating sustainable energy funds and financing models. It also assists governments in creating regulatory frameworks which integrate renewable and energy efficient technologies into the energy mix.
