12 May 2005 - The Australian government has announced plans in its budget to invest A$75.5m ($58m) over nine years for a project that will demonstrate solar power technology in everyday society.

Ministers have predicted that the project will see solar energy become part of the country's mainstream electricity supply.

Senator Campbell said: "I'm very confident [the project] will see a huge leap forward in terms of developing solar energy as a mainstream provider of energy for, not only households, but for tertiary institutions, schools and industry."

The senator said that the Solar Cities project would reach at least three and possibly four cities. The project will begin in Adelaide in two years time.

The Australian government also announced that it was extending its funding to the Photovoltaic Rebate Programme (PVRP) for another two years.
