11 April 2005 - The unreliable power supply provided by Nigeria's National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) is costing its national economy over $1bn a year, according to a report from the country's Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE).
Irene Chigube, director general of BPE, highlighted that only 3400 MW from a capacity of 6000 MW was available, in spite of the money invested by the present government.
The report suggested that between $400m and $500m would need to be invested in electricity distribution annually until the industry is deregulated in three years time.
