Mirant grant electrifies Philippines

15 March 2005 - Fifty deprived areas in the Luzon and Visayas regions of the Philippines are to receive PHP50m ($925 000) from Mirant, a grant that will see residents gain access to a reliable source of electricity.

The deal was ratified last week and was signed by Department of Land Reform Secretary, Rene C. Villa, Department of Energy Secretary Vicente S. Perez Jr. and Mirant Philippines president Edgardo A. Bautista.

The agreement divided responsibility for the project between Mirant and the Philippine government, which has included it under its Expanded Rural Electrification Programme.
