14 March 2005 - Officials from South Korea said today that state-run Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco) would provide electricity to a pilot industrial park in North Korea's border town of Kaesong this week for the first time.
Unification Ministry officials said that Kepco would provide electricity to South Korean companies in the industrial complex beginning on Wednesday after conducting safety checks.
The provision of electricity is likely to help South Korean companies operate production lines on a stable basis. So far, they had relied on their own generators for electricity.
South Korea has so far authorized 15 garment and other labour-intensive businesses to move into the pilot economic zone to take advantage of the North's cheap but skilled labour.
The provision of electricity comes amid growing US calls for prudence in pursuing large-scale economic cooperation with North Korea, which declared last month that it has manufactured atomic bombs and will boycott further negotiations on its nuclear programme.
