Pakistan switches generation emphasis from water to coal

21 February 2005 - Pakistan is to develop its coal reserves for increased use in power generation, the Federal Minister for Water and Power announced in a high level meeting last week.

Liaqat Ali Jatoi said that extensive coal reserves in Thar, Sondha and Lakhra could be utilized to meet the country's energy needs more effectively and announced that the government would now be placing an emphasis on power generation from coal instead of water.

Pakistani provinces were assured that support from Federal government would be available in the pursuit a more coal intensive generation fleet, while private investors were informed that they would be able to recoup their investments in coal fired generation within three years.
