Indonesian dam projects eyed by Chinese firm

24 December 2004 - The Chinese Machine Building International Corporation (CMBIC) has expressed interest in building dams for hydropower plants on the Batang Kandis and Batang Air Dingin rivers.

The Pandang mayor, Fauzi Bahar, said: "The CMBIC team has visited the two rivers and they said the dams can be built there."

The mayor continued to say that the city needs an additional 50-70 MW of electricity and that figure is expected to increase in line with the city's predicted rapid growth.

It is hoped that the presence of dams could provide many other benefits such as solving the threat of floods in Lubuk Buaya and its surrounding areas. The dams could also be used to supply fresh water and recreational activities.

CMBIC's vice president, Ji Hong Jun, said: "We will study further the earlier survey conducted by the city's team, but technically dams can be built there."
