China to reach 440 GW by year end

23 December 2004 - The China Association of Electric Power Enterprises has forecast that installed capacity in the country will rise from 384.5 GW to reach 440 GW by the end of 2004.

The country has put more than 50 GW of installed capacity of power into operation this year, according to sources within the association.

Most of the newly added installed capacity is in eastern, central, northern and Southern parts of the country, with little being added in the northeast and the northwest.

At the same time, the country has made much headway in construction of power grid. The state project of transmitting 10 GW power from the western power grid to South China's Guangdong Province has completed 15 months ahead of the schedule.

Some transformation projects have been completed in East China, helping ease the electricity supply shortage in the area.
